Each year members of Contemporary Handweavers of Houston and other area guilds provide approximately 500 hours of volunteer work demonstrating weaving and spinning (and a variety of interlacements such as knitting, crocheting and kumihimo) to the thousands of visitors to Agventure at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.
CHH demonstrated again at the 2010 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo! CHH weavers, spinners, and other fiber enthusiasts were available from Tuesday, March 2 through Sunday, March 21. We covered weekdays from 10-2:00 and weekends from 10-5:00. We expect to be there again in 2011!
2010 was a test for the guild. It had been decided that if we found ourselves without an adequate volunteer base, we would not be doing this again in 2011. Our sincere thanks to everyone who stepped up and not only helped this year, but readily convinced us that yes, we should continue to sponsor this demonstration. For the first time that we can remember, we had at least one volunteer signed up for every day before the rodeo even started, and that really made a difference right from the start. Next year, we are even planning to go back to two Wolf Pup looms again, so we will have all the more warp to weave.
